How long will it take until I get the results?

We usually need 10 working days for the standard test. We will always get the result notification to you within three weeks.

How old does a child need to be for a test?

The DNA test can be carried out on an infant just as well as an adult. As the DNA paternity test only needs a few cells from the cheek mucous membrane, obtained with a cheek swab, the test can also be carried out on newborn babies and infants.

What are swabs? Are they as accurate as blood samples?

A swab is used to obtain cells from inside the cheek. In comparison to blood samples, this method is a less invasive way to obtain a sample. In all other aspects, the procedure and its accuracy, the tests are identical.

Can a paternity or maternity test be 100% reliable in determining that an individual is NOT the biological father or mother of a child?

Yes. If a child and another test person do not possess the same genetic code, then that individual person cannot be the biological father or biological mother of the child. In such a case, that person can be excluded as the biological parent of the child.

What is the situation when a person is cannot be excluded by the results of a paternity or maternity test?

If the results do not exclude paternity/maternity, the probability of paternity or maternity is calculated using the genetic information from the test. The accuracy of the test means that when there is a positive result, it is positive with more than 99.999 % probability which means the test person is the mother or father of the child.

Will the results of the gene test be confidential?

Absolutely. The results are handled with the utmost confidentiality and will only be given to the person detailed on the order form.

What happens when relatives come into consideration as the father (brother, father, son)?

When the potential fathers are related - such as brother or father and son - they should be tested at the same time. The genetic codes of people related to one another have more in common than those of non-relatives. Additional tests beyond the normal tests need to be carried out when establishing paternity amongst men related to one another. We must point out that when identical twins could both potentially be the father, then the genetic methods cannot unequivocally determine paternity.

Can the paternity test also analyse hereditary diseases?

No. The paternity testing that we carry out does not give any information on hereditary diseases.

Can a sample from a baby be tested?

Samples for a paternity test can also be taken from babies. The sample should only be taken by the person who has custody of the child or when express permission has been granted by this person. For babies who are being breast fed, it is important that there are at least two hours between the last feed and the time the sample is taken.
